Biography

Wong Kar-wai, a Hong Kong Second Wave filmmaker, was born on July 17, 1956. He is an internationally acclaimed auteur, renowned for his distinctive, visually stunning, and emotionally powerful films. His extensive filmography includes Ah fei zing zyun (1990),Dung che sai duk (1994),Chung Hing sam lam (1994),Do lok tin si (1995),Chun gwong cha sit (1997),2046 (2004),My Blueberry Nights (2007),and Yi dai zong shi (2013).

Wong's films often explore themes of romance and mortality, featuring protagonists who yearn for love amidst the fleeting nature of life. His scenes are often characterized as sketchy, digressive, exhilarating, and vividly imaginative. Wong's work has garnered widespread critical acclaim, with his film Fa yeung nin wa (2000),starring Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung, receiving particular praise.

Wong's achievements in the film industry are impressive, with him being the first Chinese director to win the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival, for his work on Chun gwong cha sit in 1997. He has also held the position of President of the Jury at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, making him the only Chinese person to have done so. Additionally, Wong was the President of the Jury at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival in February 2013.

Wong has received numerous honors for his contributions to the film industry. In 2006, he was awarded the National Order of the Legion of Honour: Knight (Highest Degree) by the French Government. In 2013, he was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters: Commander (Highest Degree) by the French Minister of Culture.
