Valeria Marini was born in Rome, Italy, to a father from Vignanello, Viterbo province, and a mother from Cagliari, Sardinia. After her parents' separation, she moved to Cagliari with her mother and younger sister Claudia. She has a brother named Fabio. Marini attended the G. Maria Dettori classical high school in Cagliari and later graduated from the Liceo San Gabriele in Rome.

She began her career in show business as a model, using the pseudonym Lolly. In 1990, she participated in the national competition Una Ragazza Per Il Cinema, where she took third place. She then appeared in several films, including Un Orso Chiamato Arturo and Crack.

In 1991, Marini made her theater debut in Neil Simon's play The Irresistible Boys, playing the role of a naive and somewhat ditzy waitress. This character became her stylistic signature and brought her enormous success.
