Born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1949, he grew up in Dayton, Ohio, where his journey began. Throughout his life, he has traversed the vast expanse of North America, Japan, Europe, the Arctic, China, Tibet, Nepal, and India, immersing himself in the rich cultural heritage of these diverse lands. As a devoted husband and father of two daughters, he is a multifaceted individual, simultaneously embodying the roles of writer, teacher, and ardent student of life.
Stephen K. Hayes embarked on his martial arts odyssey as a teenager in the 1960s, in Ohio. His pioneering efforts in introducing the enigmatic Japanese ninja martial arts to the Western world earned him the esteemed recognition of being inducted into the prestigious Black Belt Hall of Fame in 1985. This honor was a testament to his unwavering dedication and tireless efforts to popularize these ancient traditions. In 1993, the revered Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi of Chiba-ken, Japan, bestowed upon him the extraordinary distinction of ju-dan 10th degree Black Belt, acknowledging his mastery of the nine historical traditions of the Bujinkan Dojo martial arts.
