Stavros Psillakis, a renowned director and producer of anthropological documentaries, was born in the picturesque city of Chania, Crete, in 1954. His fascination with the human condition led him to explore the most pressing and poignant aspects of existence, often focusing on the borderline situations that shape our understanding of the world.
Psillakis' academic background is as impressive as his filmmaking career. He initially studied Electrical Engineering at the prestigious National Technical University of Athens before shifting his focus to Film Directing at the Hantzikou Film School in Athens. His passion for documentary filmmaking soon led him to receive a scholarship from the French state to study at the renowned Varan School in Paris, specializing in Anthropological Documentary Filmmaking.
Throughout his illustrious career, Psillakis has garnered numerous accolades, including the 1st Documentary Film Award of the Hellenic Film Academy in 2010 for his documentary There Was No Other Way. He is a founding member of both the Hellenic Film Academy and the Hellenic Documentary Association, and has collaborated with esteemed filmmakers such as Lakis Papastathis, Dimos Theou, and Stavros Tornes.
Psillakis' extensive filmography boasts over 40 films, showcasing his versatility and dedication to his craft. Some of his most notable works include The Man Who Disturbed the Universe, Metaxa - listening to Time, Olympia, Short Gypsy Stories, The Light Inside, as well as the trilogy For no reasons - meetings with Yorgos Maniatis, Debt, and Farewell - The Memory of the Land.
