Sonny's life journey began in the nation's capital, Washington D.C., where he was born to his mother, Betty L. King. His early years were marked by a passion for the performing arts, as he honed his skills in plays and music at Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, Maryland. During his high school years, he also played keyboard in a local band, covering popular songs and developing his musical talents.
After completing his high school education, Sonny attended the University of Maryland, where he studied drama for a brief period. However, his plans were soon disrupted by the Vietnam War, which was raging at the time. The draft beckoned, and Sonny was called to serve in the United States Navy. He spent a year aboard the USS Ranger, an aircraft carrier, during which time he gained valuable experience and made lifelong connections.
Following his time in the Navy, Sonny and his family relocated to Los Angeles in 1981. He began to make a name for himself in the entertainment industry, working as an actor, musician, and electrician.
