Shoojit Sircar, a young sports enthusiast and soccer player, was introduced to cinema by chance during his XIIth grade, when a friend suggested watching a film. This film, Satyajit Ray's 'Pather Panchali', marked the beginning of a new perspective for Sircar, and he went on to watch the entire 'Apu trilogy' and other films by Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, and Mrinal Sen.
Three films in particular, Truffaut's '400 Blows', Vittorio De Sica's 'Bicycle Thieves', and Oliver Stone's "Platoon", had a significant impact on Sircar, encouraging him to look at life differently.
Sircar joined ACT ONE, a theatre group in Delhi, where he gained experience in creating theatre with minimal resources and developed discipline.
His first big break as an independent director was a commercial on football, followed by a music video, 'MANN KE MANJEERE', which explored a realistic journey of a woman who breaks away from an abusive married life and becomes a truck driver.
Shoojit's first major directorial feature, 'YAHAAN', won him the best director award in the Osian Film Festival 2005, and he went on to direct 'VICKY DONOR', 'MADRAS CAFE', 'PIKU', 'PINK', 'OCTOBER', 'GULABO SITABO', and 'SARDAR UDHAM', each with a distinct tone and theme.
As a producer, Sircar has backed projects like "Aparajita Tumi" and "Open Tee Bioscope".
As an ad filmmaker, Sircar has received international recognition for campaigns like the Cannes award-winning 'Lead India campaign' and his last digital campaign, an authentic reflection on modern parenting, which went viral on social media.
