Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Sherry grew up in Prospect Village, where she initially pursued her passion for Psychology and Gerontology at Mount St Vincent University. Concurrently, she also explored her modeling career in Halifax and later in Toronto. After returning to Toronto in 1996, Sherry developed a taste for acting, which led her to work on several locally produced shows, movie of the weeks, and independent films. Following this experience, she felt compelled to learn about the production side of the industry, which prompted her to enroll in the two-year Screen Arts program at the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) in Halifax in 1999.
Throughout her training, Sherry worked on numerous short films, honing her skills and building her confidence. She then progressed to the Shortworks training program, where she directed the successful short film, Finding Peace, in 2002. Devanney has since completed her first documentary, Our Race, a 40-minute film that chronicles the journey of the Women Alike Abreast A River Dragon Boat Team of Nova Scotia over a five-year period. The team consists of breast cancer survivors of various ages, who have formed a tight-knit community as they bond over their shared experiences and connect with the spirit of the dragon and with each other.
The documentary, Our Race, is a heartwarming portrayal of the strength, support, and power of these women as they navigate their journey together. Sherry is currently working with Mentor Pictures, where she is developing her next project.
