Sam Wanamaker, a renowned actor and director, was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants, Molly (Babell) and Maurice Wattenmaker, a skilled tailor. He pursued his higher education at Drake University, located in the picturesque state of Iowa, before further refining his craft through extensive training at the esteemed Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Wanamaker's early career was marked by his multifaceted involvement with various summer stock companies in Chicago, where he showcased his exceptional acting and directing abilities.

As his career continued to flourish, Wanamaker made his London debut in 1952, a milestone that paved the way for his future success. In 1957, he was appointed director of the New Shakespeare Theatre in Liverpool, a prestigious position that allowed him to nurture his passion for the works of the great William Shakespeare.
