Rona Munro embarked on a writing career in 1981, subsequently producing a wide range of creative works across various mediums, including film, television, stage, and radio. Her playwriting endeavors led to collaborations with esteemed institutions, such as The Play on One in 1988, as well as the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Notably, she was accepted into the BBC's esteemed writer's training course, where she crossed paths with Doctor Who script editor Andrew Cartmel, who shared her passion for the iconic series and became a valuable mentor.
This serendipitous encounter ultimately led to Munro's involvement in the Doctor Who franchise, culminating in the creation of Survival: Part One in 1989, which marked the final transmitted serial of the original run. Her impressive portfolio subsequently expanded to include work on Casualty, as well as other notable television projects such as Bumping the Odds in 1997 and Rehab in 2003.
Munro's film credits are equally impressive, featuring notable works such as Ladybird Ladybird in 1994, directed by the renowned Ken Loach, and Aimee & Jaguar in 1999. Fast forward to 2016, Munro made history by becoming the first "classic series" writer to be employed to write for the revamped Doctor Who series in 2005, marking a triumphant return to the franchise that had first captivated her imagination.
