Rigan Machado, one of five brothers from the Machado family, began his martial arts journey at the tender age of five, training with his cousins, the renowned Gracie Family. In an interview, Rigan revealed that his mother's sister married Carlos Gracie, the founder of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, solidifying his connection to the esteemed family.
Initially, Rigan viewed training as a game, but as he grew older, he began to take it more seriously, devoting himself to the art from the age of 14. Under the guidance of his instructors, Rolls Gracie and Carlos Gracie Jr., Rigan's training sessions became increasingly technical and intensive.
Rigan's impressive competitive record speaks for itself, with 365 wins and only two losses in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition. He holds the remarkable record of completing 19 matches in a single day, finishing each with a submission. Moreover, he remains unbeaten in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition for over 13 years.
A pioneer in the sport, Rigan was awarded the first black belt under Gracie Barra founder Carlos Gracie Jr. and is one of the original teachers who taught in the garage of Rorion Gracie in the early days of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in America. He has also trained with his cousins, including Rickson Gracie, Rorion Gracie, and Rillion Gracie, as well as his uncle Carlos Gracie Sr., and brothers.
Throughout his illustrious career, Rigan has earned an 8th-degree red and black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is widely regarded as one of the top competitors in the sport's history. He has also competed and won numerous tournaments in judo, Sambo, and wrestling.
Today, Rigan Machado shares his expertise as the head instructor at his school, "The Academy Beverly Hills," located in Beverly Hills, California. He is sponsored by Sanabul, a sporting goods brand, and has an official Rigan Machado product line within the company. Additionally, Rigan serves as the commissioner of the Jiu Jitsu World League.
