Biography

Peter William Postlethwaite, a captivating individual with striking bony cheeks and a rugged physique, was born on February 16, 1946. As a distinguished character actor, he made a lasting impact on the stage, television, and film. Growing up as the youngest of four siblings in a Catholic family in Warrington, Lancashire, near Liverpool, he was raised in a middle-class household by working-class parents.

Peter attended St Mary's University in London, where he initially pursued his studies. However, during his time at university, he developed a strong interest in theatre, much to the dismay of his father, who envisioned a more secure future for his children.

Following his education, Peter began his career as a drama teacher at a Catholic girls' convent school. Despite his father's reservations, he decided to dedicate himself to acting full-time. He went on to build an impressive repertoire of classical stage credits, working with renowned organizations such as the Bristol Old Vic Drama School, Liverpool Everyman, Manchester Royal Exchange, and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

By the 1980s, Peter had established himself as a talented actor, and he began to transition into film and television roles. One of his most notable performances during this period was in the critically acclaimed film Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988),where he played a wife abuser.

Throughout the 1990s, Peter continued to take on a wide range of roles, earning his first Oscar nomination for his outstanding performance as Daniel Day-Lewis' father in In the Name of the Father (1993). He also appeared in notable films such as The Usual Suspects (1995),Brassed Off (1996),and Amistad (1997).

In addition to his film work, Peter made significant contributions to television, starring in shows such as Sharpe's Company (1994),Lost for Words (1999),and The Sins (2000). He maintained a strong presence in both the UK and international film industries, avoiding the public eye except for occasional displays of political activism.

In his later years, Peter continued to work in films, taking on roles in The Shipping News (2001),The Limit (2004),Dark Water (2005),The Omen (2006),Ghost Son (2007),and Solomon Kane (2009). In 2010, he appeared in Clash of the Titans (2010),Inception (2010),and The Town (2010).

Sadly, Peter Postlethwaite passed away on January 2, 2011, at the age of 64, due to pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his wife, son, and daughter from a prior relationship.
