Paul Rieckhoff, a decorated author and advocate for veterans' rights, has had a distinguished career in the military and beyond. Born and raised in the United States, Paul was drawn to the world of politics and military service from a young age. He pursued his passion for political science at Amherst College, graduating with honors in 1998.
Following his graduation, Paul entered the U.S. Army Reserves, where he completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He was assigned to the 812th Military Police Company and quickly rose through the ranks, earning the rank of Specialist.
In 1999, Paul accepted a position with J.P. Morgan and was transferred to the New York Army National Guard. He continued to serve with distinction, entering Officer Candidate School (OCS) in 2001 and graduating as a Distinguished Military Graduate.
Paul's military career took a dramatic turn on September 11, 2001, when he was in his apartment in Manhattan when the first plane struck the World Trade Center. Without hesitation, Paul donned his gear and volunteered to assist in the rescue efforts, eventually being activated with his unit that evening.
Paul's experiences in Iraq, where he served as a platoon leader for 3rd Platoon, B Company, 3/124th, an air assault infantry unit, are detailed in his book "Chasing Ghosts". After returning from Iraq, Paul became increasingly frustrated with the lack of support for returning veterans and decided to take action.
In 2004, Paul founded and became the executive director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA),a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families. Through IAVA, Paul has worked tirelessly to address critical issues facing new veterans, including mental health injuries, a stretched VA system, inadequate healthcare for female veterans, and GI Bill educational benefits.
In addition to his work with IAVA, Paul serves on the New York State Council on Returning Veterans and their Families, and continues to advocate for the rights and welfare of veterans across the United States.
