Biography

Noël Mitrani was born in Toronto, Canada in 1969, but his upbringing took place in France. This dual cultural heritage would later have a profound impact on his work, influencing his unique perspective as a filmmaker.

Mitrani's academic background is equally impressive, with a degree in History and Philosophy from the prestigious Sorbonne University. Prior to pursuing a career in film, he worked as a press illustrator, honing his skills in visual storytelling.

Mitrani's foray into the world of cinema began with writing, and he went on to direct his first short film, "After Shave", in 1999. This moving comedy is set in a suburban supermarket and showcases Mitrani's ability to craft engaging narratives.

Over the next several years, Mitrani continued to hone his craft, directing three more short films, including "Les Siens" (2001),which explores the blurred lines between dreams and reality.

In 2005, Mitrani took the bold step of establishing his own production company, StanKaz Films. This allowed him to produce his first feature-length film, "Sur la trace d'Igor Rizzi" (2006),starring French actor Laurent Lucas. Despite the limited budget, Mitrani remained committed to shooting on 35 mm film, a decision that paid off when the film received critical acclaim at the Venice International Critics' Week and won the Award for Best Canadian First Feature Film at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival.

Mitrani's subsequent films have solidified his reputation as a masterful storyteller. "The Kate Logan Affair" (2010),a dark and mysterious thriller starring Alexis Bledel, received widespread distribution. His third feature, "The Military Man", is a drama that explores the traumatic effects of war on a former French soldier. "Après coup" (2017) dissects the insidious nature of guilt, while "Cassy" (2019) tackles the complex issues surrounding childhood, grief, and sexual harassment.

Mitrani's latest film, "Toutes les deux" (Between Them, 2021),is a spy comedy that delves into the attraction between two women amidst a backdrop of male jealousy.

Throughout his career, Mitrani's unique blend of French and Quebecois cultural influences has been a defining characteristic of his work. His fascination with the 1970s and his penchant for depicting solitary figures struggling to overcome their torments have also been recurring themes.
