Milo Manara, a renowned illustrator of adult graphic novels, embarked on his professional journey by working on "fumetti", a genre of cheap illustrated paperbacks that gained immense popularity in Italy during the 1950-60s.
In 1976, his career witnessed a significant upward trajectory following his contributions to the illustrated magazine Pilote. He also gained recognition for designing posters for the films of the acclaimed director, Federico Fellini. This collaboration would later extend to comic book adaptations of some of Fellini's most iconic films.
During the 1980s, Manara shifted his focus towards the realm of erotic graphic novels, penning and illustrating titles such as "Click!", "Butterscotch", and "Gullivera", which is an erotic reinterpretation of Jonathan Swift's classic novel "Gulliver's Travels".
Manara's body of work is distinguished by a lighthearted and playful approach to sexuality, featuring women who are often depicted as impossibly alluring and their relationships as free from guilt and emotional attachment. While some of the scenes may be quite explicit, they never stray into the realm of hardcore pornography. To this day, Manara remains an active and prolific artist, continuing to create his unique brand of graphic storytelling in Italy.
