Maricel Alvarez is a multifaceted artist, exceling in various roles such as stage and film actress, director, choreographer, and curator. Her creative practice seamlessly blends the boundaries between theater, performance, and visual arts, utilizing the human body as a medium to convey artistic and critical messages.
Alvarez's interdisciplinary approach is deeply rooted in her academic and artistic background, which includes studying Literature at the Universidad de Buenos Aires and taking courses with renowned experts in theater and contemporary dance. Since 1999, she has maintained a close artistic collaboration with Emilio García Wehbi, and has also worked with an array of prominent artists and companies, including El Periférico de Objetos, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Sophie Calle, William Kentridge, and Woody Allen, among others.
Her work has been showcased in various stages, galleries, film festivals, and museums across Argentina and abroad, such as the Centro de Experimentación del Teatro Colón, Centro de Experimentación Contemporánea del Teatro Argentino de La Plata, and the Berliner Festspiele in Germany. As a lecturer, Alvarez has taught courses at several institutions, including the Ludwig Maximilian Universität in Germany, Freies Universität Berlin in Germany, Kyoto University of Arts and Design in Japan, and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
As a performer and/or director, Alvarez has participated in numerous festivals in Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Chile, Spain, France, Japan, Mexico, and Switzerland. In 2016, she was a Resident Artist at the Museo Universitario del Chopo in Mexico City. Currently, Alvarez serves as a faculty member at the Master Program Maestría de Teatro y Performance at the Universidad Nacional de las Artes (Una) and is an international artists program Curator at the Bienal de Performance de Argentina (BP.17).
