Biography

Laurence Naismith, a talented British character actor, initially pursued a career at sea as a Merchant Marine sailor before venturing into the world of acting. His theatrical debut occurred in 1927, when he joined the chorus of the London production of the musical "Oh, Boy". Three years later, he became a member of the esteemed Bristol Repertory, where he remained until the outbreak of World War II.

Following his nine-year service in the Royal Artillery, during which he attained the rank of Acting Battery Commander, Naismith returned to the stage and simultaneously made his film debut. His extensive maritime background proved invaluable in various film roles, including that of a steamboat captain in the 1953 film "Mogambo", Dr. Hawkins in "Boy on a Dolphin" (1957),the captain of the ill-fated Titanic in "A Night to Remember" (1958),and the First Sea Lord in "Sink the Bismarck!" (1960).

Naismith's acting talents extended beyond the silver screen, as he also made numerous television appearances. Notably, he took on recurring roles as Judge Fulton on the popular series "The Persuaders!" (1971) and Father Harris on the comedy "Oh, Father!" (1973).
