Biography

Lance, a renowned cinematographer and director, embarked on his artistic journey by studying film and photography at the prestigious San Francisco Art Institute. His passion for the craft led him to relocate to New York, where he had the privilege of assisting the esteemed photographer and filmmaker Bruce Weber.

As he began his career, Lance collaborated with his close friend and fellow artist Spike Jonze, shooting music videos and commercials that quickly gained attention from the industry. His impressive portfolio soon attracted the attention of influential directors, including Michel Gondry, Mark Romanek, Stéphane Sednaoui, and Dayton Faris, for whom he shot seminal music videos. This led to his winning the MTV Music Award for Best Cinematography for Fatboy Slim's iconic music video "Weapon of Choice" in 2001.

Lance's feature cinematography debut was the cult classic "Buffalo 66," directed by Vincent Gallo. His extensive list of credits includes notable films such as Sofia Coppola's "Lost in Translation," which earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Cinematography, as well as "Marie Antoinette" and Spike Jonze's "Being John Malkovich," "Adaptation," and "Where the Wild Things Are."

In the late 1990s, Lance began transitioning into directing, and in 1998, he co-founded the production company Park Pictures with his business partner Jackie Kelman Bisbee. Over the years, he has received an impressive 35 Cannes Lions for his work with clients such as Nike, Apple, HP, VW, P&G, and Subaru, among others.

Lance's direction and cinematography have been recognized with numerous nominations and awards. He was nominated Best Commercial Director by the DGA in 2003, 2011, 2012, and 2017. His Super Bowl spot for Volkswagen, "The Force," became the talk of the 2011 Super Bowl broadcast, earning him widespread acclaim and recognition. The film was named the best ad of 2011 by AdWeek, Creativity, and YouTube, and consistently ranks on lists of the greatest Super Bowl ads of all time.

Lance's Apple film "Misunderstood" won the 2014 Emmy Award for Outstanding Commercial, and in 2019, he won his second Emmy Award for Nike's "Dream Crazy" commercial, starring Colin Kaepernick.
