Julian Starks began his career in Cincinnati, Ohio, as a member of the dance troupe FLEX, which won numerous local dance contests and gained national recognition. This led to his move to New York City, where he spent nine years working as an actor in theater, independent films, commercials, and soap operas.
During his time in New York, Julian studied with renowned acting teachers Sanford Meisner, Bobby Lewis, and Martin Barter at the Neighborhood Playhouse Theater. He also worked as a mobile disc jockey for six years to supplement his acting income.
In addition to his acting career, Julian began to explore the filmmaking side of the industry by attending The School of Visual Arts, where he studied screenwriting and directing.
In 1996, Julian moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career in film and television, studying with Larry Moss, Ivana Chubbuck, and Aaron Speiser. He also continued his education at UCLA Extension's filmmaking course, where he studied screenwriting, directing, and editing.
Julian then enrolled in The Los Angeles Film School, where he focused on directing, screenwriting, producing, and editing. He went on to direct three short films that did the film festival circuit and completed his first full-length feature screenplay.
In 2004, Julian formed Hollywood Filmmakers, a film production company, and is currently in post-production on his first feature documentary film, "Journey to Sundance," which he executive produced, produced, directed, composed, and co-edited.
Julian has also directed Tim Coyne's one-man stage show, "American Puberty," and is in pre-production on "Moment of Silence," a 35mm short film that he co-wrote and is directing. This film was awarded the Panavision 35mm Camera Package.
Julian later graduated from The Brooks Institute of Photography in Ventura, California, and has continued his passion for storytelling through photography. His first Fine Art Photography Book, "Life Behind Bars Vol. I," showcases his love of animals and his efforts to raise awareness about endangered species.
Julian has created Visions of the World Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit company dedicated to raising public awareness and assisting entities that care for endangered animals. He invites others to join him in this worthy cause and to become more aware of the plight of endangered species.
Julian's experience in all aspects of the entertainment industry has given him a unique perspective on filmmaking, and he is a creative and daring producer/director/writer/photographer/actor and host who seeks to elicit all talent and creative input from performers and crew involved in his projects.
