Joseph Rene Perez Herrera was born on June 9th, 1988, in San Antonio, Texas, to Christina Cantu and Marcos Cantu, a transmission expert, and is the oldest of five siblings. His family has played a significant role in his life, with his grandmother Teresa Herrera and great aunt Blanca Resendez having a profound influence.
Joseph Rene attended Harlandale High School, where he was an athlete and dedicated student. It was during his high school years that he discovered his passion for acting through a student film project and a drama course. He went on to graduate from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a degree in Kinesiology, focusing on Exercise Science, and a minor in Business Administration.
Joseph Rene's love for acting was rekindled during his college years after stumbling upon a local acting class and receiving an offer for representation on the spot. Initially, he aspired to be a comedic actor, but a pivotal moment in his acting class changed his path. He was given his first dramatic scene, which he struggled to connect with, and this experience drove him to aspire to a greater level, leading to a deeper understanding of his craft and himself.
Joseph Rene's early works include appearances in the television show Memphis Beat (2010) alongside Jason Lee, as well as several short films, including Blackbook Curse (2011),Thank You for This (2011),Trial of Duality (2012),and Not Shown for Clarity (2013). His first lead roles were in the films Between Hell and a Heartbeat (2011) and Davis Farm (2014). He has since demonstrated his versatility by taking on a wide range of characters, from the comedic Jerry in The Reflex Tester (2013) to the emotional Jamie in Bound (2014),and the afflicted Sam Parsons in The Demon Inside (2017).
In addition to his acting career, Joseph Rene is a fitness enthusiast and is certified as an ACSM Exercise Physiologist. He aims to bring a dynamic and compelling presence to his acting work and continues to strive for versatility in his roles.
