Rinzler's educational background is impressive, having graduated with a master's degree in comparative literature from New York University, a prestigious institution. Prior to his academic pursuits, he attended the Parson's School of Design in Lower Manhattan, where he honed his skills.
Between 2001 and 2014, Rinzler served as the executive editor of Lucasbooks, the publishing subsidiary of Lucasfilm. During his tenure, he penned more than 20 books, including definitive histories of the making of the original Star Wars movie and Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980). His work also extended to the realm of television, as he wrote the scripts for two season six episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008).
Rinzler's writing skills were not limited to the Star Wars franchise. He also published books about the making of Indiana Jones, Planet of the Apes (1968),Alien (1979),and The Shining (1980). His literary endeavors continued with the release of a novel in 2018, All Up, which blended history and speculative fiction to explore the world of astrodynamics during and after World War II and the space race, ultimately culminating in the Apollo 11 moon mission.
Tragically, Jonathan Rinzler passed away at the age of 58 on July 28, 2021, due to pancreatic cancer.
