John Barry, a renowned British production designer, embarked on his illustrious career in the art department of the iconic movie Cleopatra, released in 1963. Throughout his illustrious career, Barry is most notably recognized for his extraordinary design work on the groundbreaking films "Star Wars" and "Superman: The Movie".
Barry's remarkable talent and expertise garnered him the opportunity to direct the sci-fi movie "Saturn 3", however, he was replaced during filming. Undeterred, Barry returned to the Star Wars universe, this time taking on the role of second unit director for "The Empire Strikes Back".
Tragedy struck on May 31st, 1979, just two weeks into filming, when Barry collapsed on-set, his temperature soaring to a staggering 104 degrees. Despite receiving medical attention, Barry's condition continued to deteriorate, and he succumbed to meningitis at 2am on June 1st, leaving behind a legacy of incredible work in the film industry.
