Jennifer Redfearn is a renowned documentary director and producer, celebrated for her immersive storytelling style that delves into the intricate relationships between political, environmental, and cultural forces and their profound impact on individual lives.
Her most notable work includes the 2011 Academy Award-nominated film, Sun Come Up, which poignantly chronicles the struggles of a small island community as they face the devastating consequences of rising sea levels and the loss of their homeland. The film premiered on HBO after a successful theatrical run in thirty U.S. cities, captivating audiences nationwide.
Redfearn's more recent project, Tocando La Luz (Touch the Light),is a powerful and moving account of three blind Cuban women's courageous fight for independence. The film premiered at the Full Frame Documentary Festival, where it won the prestigious Charles E. Guggenheim Award.
In addition to her feature films, Redfearn has also directed the theatrical feature, Landfill Harmonic, which won the 2015 SXSW audience award. She has produced several short documentaries, multimedia films, and interactive stories for MediaStorm, which were nominated for the World Press Photo and Webby awards in the multimedia and documentary categories.
Throughout her career, Redfearn has received numerous accolades and grants, including a fellowship from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Fork Films, Jerome Foundation, Chicken & Egg Pictures, NYSCA, and NYWIFT. Her films have been supported by ITVS, IFP, and the Hot Docs Forum.
Redfearn holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College and a Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia University. She has also taught documentary filmmaking at Columbia University and NYU.
In 2010, Redfearn co-founded Red Antelope Films with her partner, Tim Metzger, marking the beginning of a new era in her illustrious career as a documentary filmmaker.
