Biography

Jayce Salloum's artistic journey is deeply rooted in his intimate connections with places and the people who inhabit them. He tends to venture into uncharted territories only when invited or when there is a strong affinity, allowing his projects to flourish from a profound understanding of the local culture.

As a nomadic artist, Salloum relies heavily on the kindness of strangers, often finding himself in unfamiliar surroundings where language barriers and cultural differences are a significant challenge. Despite these obstacles, he has been able to navigate various artistic mediums, including installation, photography, drawing, performance, text, and video, since 1978.

Throughout his career, Salloum has curated and conducted a wide range of cultural projects, often blurring the lines between art and social engagement. His work has taken him to numerous locations around the world, including Afghanistan, China, Lebanon, Palestine/Israel, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Australia, the former Yugoslavia, France, Kamloops, Cumberland House, Galapagos Islands, and many other places throughout the Americas.

Salloum's artistic practice exists at the intersection of the personal, quotidian, local, and transnational. He has consistently explored the gap between experience and representation, using his work to challenge dominant narratives and assert a critical perspective on social and political realities.

Currently residing in Vancouver, Salloum has exhibited his work at a diverse range of venues, from small community centers to esteemed institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Canada, and the Louvre. His texts and works have been featured in numerous publications, including The Archive, Projecting Migration, Practical Dreamers, and Third Text.

In recognition of his contributions to the art world, Salloum received the 2014 Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts. He is represented by MKG127 in Toronto and continues to produce innovative and thought-provoking work that challenges and engages audiences worldwide.
