Jackie Appiah is a renowned Ghanaian actress, with a career spanning television, film, and brand ambassadorship. Known as the "Queen" and "Maestro" of the movie industry in Ghana and beyond, she has made a significant impact on the African entertainment landscape.
Born on December 5, 1983, in Canada, Jackie is the youngest of five children to Janet Owusu and George Appiah. She began her education at Derrydown Public School in Toronto, Ontario, before moving to Ghana for high school. During her time in Toronto, she showcased her interest in acting, becoming a regular fixture in school plays.
In 1995, at the age of 12, Jackie moved to Ghana to live with her older sister. She continued her education at Faith Montessori in Accra and later attended Achimota Preparatory School, where she was voted Girls' Entertainment Prefect, further fueling her passion for the arts. During this period, she auditioned for the Hal Jackson Talent Teens Show, hoping to perform at the famous Apollo Theatre, although she ultimately emerged as the first runner-up.
Undeterred, Jackie pursued her dreams, and in 2001, she received her breakthrough when she was cast as Enyonam Blagogee in the television series "Things We Do for Love." The show, which aimed to educate viewers on sexual reproductive health, also earned her her first TV commercial, promoting protection against HIV/AIDS.
Jackie's success in "Things We Do for Love" led to her first movie role in 2004, starring in "Divine Love" alongside Majid Michel and Van Vicker. Her acting career continued to flourish, with roles in numerous films, including "Sleep Walker," "Beyonce," "The Return of Beyonce," "Princess Tyra," and "4play," among others.
In 2012, Jackie received a leading role in the Hollywood/Nollywood drama film "Turning Point," starring alongside K.D. Aubert, Todd Bridges, Ernie Hudson, and Patience Ozokwor. Her impressive performances have earned her several honors, nominations, and awards, including the African Movie Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for "Beyonce" (2007),the Arts Critics and Reviewers Association of Ghana (ACRAG) Award for Best Actress (2007),and the African Movie Academy Award Best Actress in a Leading Role for "Perfect Picture" (2010).
Aside from her acting career, Jackie is also a brand ambassador for several organizations, including IPMC, UB Hair Relaxer, Class Perfumes, and Globacom Telecommunications. She is a devoted mother to her son and often uses her platform to give back to society, identifying a group of needy individuals to celebrate her birthday or Christmas every year. She donates a portion of her earnings to various organizations, including Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Chosen Rehab Center, Dzorwulu Special School, Osu Children's Home, and TV3 Talented Kids.
