Gurdeep Singh, a renowned personality, hails from the esteemed Ahluwalia clan of Lahore, Punjab, India. His paternal family was a prominent land-owning dynasty, while his maternal grandfather held the esteemed position of Commissioner of Police in Lahore. The Indian-Pakistan partition forced his family to flee in the dead of night, ultimately settling in Agra, near the iconic Taj Mahal, where Gurdeep was born to a family of three siblings. His father, a Carriage Inspector with the Indian Railways, also fought alongside the British Army in Burma during World War II.
Growing up, Gurdeep's family traveled extensively due to his father's job, never staying in one place for more than two years. After his father's retirement, the family relocated to Bombay (now Mumbai),where Gurdeep graduated from high school at the age of 16. During his senior year, he developed a fascination with the Bombay film studios, eventually writing about film stars for popular magazines and publishing short stories in major literary publications. His older brother, concerned about his exposure to the film industry at such a young age, enrolled him in the prestigious Sir J.J. School of Arts.
At Sir J.J., Gurdeep further established himself as a photojournalist, with his work published in major Indian publications. He received an impressive invitation to read his short stories on All-India Radio, Bombay, during his college days. Gurdeep graduated in 1967 with a degree in applied Arts and a diploma in Fine Arts. Post-graduation, he founded the advertising firm Studio CAS, serving Bombay's publishing and entertainment corporations.
Gurdeep's big break came in 1969, when he played a leading role as a Sikh in the film Uski Roti, a historic milestone for the Indian film industry. Although he received rave reviews, the experience was marred by double-talk and backstabbing. He subsequently lost interest in the Indian film industry, focusing instead on painting and exhibiting his work in the United States, New York, New Jersey, and briefly in Bombay. Gurdeep also worked as an Art Director for three New York City firms.
In 1989, Gurdeep founded a New York City-based advertising and marketing firm, serving national and international clients. In 2002, he received a recommendation for a small TV role, marking his re-entry into the film industry. Gurdeep decided to close his advertising firm to focus on his acting career. As a proud Sikh, he adheres to the teachings of the Ten Gurus and the Guru Granth Sahib. He is also a devoted father of five children, whom he affectionately refers to as his "Panj Piyare" (the first five Sikhs baptized by Guru Gobind Singhji). Gurdeep resides with his family in New York City.
