Born in the city that never sleeps, New York, and subsequently raised in the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, Mulligan emerged as the preeminent baritone saxophonist of his era, boasting an illustrious career as a composer and arranger, and being one of the founding fathers of the post-World War II "West Coast" school of jazz. Furthermore, Mulligan's personal life was marked by a trio of marriages, as well as a long-term romantic relationship with the talented actress Judy Holliday, an affair that commenced in 1958 and continued until her untimely passing.
