Biography

Geoffrey Fletcher began making films as a child, initially working with a video camera and cast of toys and action figures. This early start led to his acceptance into NYU's Tisch Graduate Film Program after graduating from Harvard University. He has also had the opportunity to apprentice under renowned directors Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee.

Geoffrey's short film Magic Markers, which he wrote, directed, shot, and edited, received widespread acclaim, including recognition from the Directors Guild of America and the Sundance Film Festival.

As a screenwriter, Geoffrey is perhaps best known for his work on Precious (2009),an adaptation of Sapphire's novel "Push." This film received widespread critical acclaim and won numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Writing (Adapted Screenplay) from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2010. This marked the first time an African American had won an Oscar for writing, directing, or producing.

Precious (2009) was presented by executive producers Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry and released by Lionsgate in November 2009. The film went on to win the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, making it only the third film to do so in the festival's 25-year history. It also won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, making it the only film to win the top prizes at both Sundance and Toronto.

Geoffrey's work on Precious (2009) was widely recognized, with him being named one of Variety's "10 Screenwriters to Watch" and receiving numerous awards, including the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay, the Black Reel Award for Best Screenplay, and the Best Adapted Screenplay award from the Chlotrudis, AAFCA, and the Satellite Awards.

In addition to his work as a screenwriter, Geoffrey has an extensive background in photography and editing and has served as an adjunct professor of film at Columbia University and New York University, teaching courses ranging from "Directing the Camera" to "Developing the Screenplay."

Geoffrey's feature directorial debut is Violet & Daisy (2011),which stars Saoirse Ronan, Alexis Bledel, and the late James Gandolfini. The film received the Cinevation Award from the Savannah College of Art and Design and was an official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Geoffrey's forthcoming films will explore genres such as social justice, science fiction, and horror. His latest project, Trial By Fire, is a drama about a landmark death penalty case and was released theatrically in 2019, starring Laura Dern and Jack O'Connell.
