Gavin Heffernan is a Canadian filmmaker and screenwriter based in Los Angeles, known for his work in the horror genre and experimental visual projects.
As a screenwriter, Heffernan has collaborated with frequent partner Adam Robitel on several projects, including the psychological horror film "The Taking of Deborah Logan" (2014),"Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension" (2015) for Paramount Pictures, and an upcoming supernatural thriller for Sony produced by Sam Raimi. The duo is also developing an original horror series with Darren Aronofsky's Protozoa Pictures for television.
In addition to his work in film, Heffernan is recognized for his directing and timelapse expertise, having created experimental visual works for various clients and projects. His timelapses have been featured in concerts, tours, and documentaries, including those of The Rolling Stones, Roger Waters, and Paul Simon.
Heffernan's early career began with his micro-budget feature film "Expiration" (2003),which premiered at the 2004 Canadian Filmmakers Festival in Toronto and received critical acclaim. The film was praised by Variety, Film Festival Today, and Ain't it Cool News, and was later named "the first major work of the Student-DV New Wave" by The Film Journal.
Throughout his career, Heffernan's experimental timelapses have been showcased on various platforms, including Virgin America, BBC Earth, Bravo's "Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce," and numerous press and TV outlets. His work has also been featured in documentary series, such as Science Channel's "Alien Encounters" and Travel Channel's "Trip Flip."
Heffernan has also directed and produced several successful short and experimental films. His unconventional anti-war film "Grand Wheel" (2008) premiered at the 2008 SXSW Film Festival and went on to play over forty festivals in fifteen countries, earning several awards and nominations. His collection of experimental HD Short Films, "Devolution" (2010),won an Audience Choice Award at the 2010 Hollyshorts Film Festival in LA, and the sequel, "Devolution: Reckoning" (2011),premiered at the Festival Nouveau Cinema in Montreal and played over fifteen subsequent festivals.
