Fred Dekker was born on April 9, 1959, in San Francisco, California. As a child, he was a huge fan of comic books, monster movies, and films, which would later influence his work as a writer and director. Despite being rejected by both USC and UCLA film schools, Dekker attended UCLA as an English major, where he befriended future screenwriters Shane Black, Ed Solomon, and Chris Matheson.
Dekker's early projects in Hollywood included a 3-D "Godzilla" picture that unfortunately never came to fruition. His first film credit was writing the story for the horror-comedy "House". He made his directorial debut with the horror film "Night of the Creeps", which paid homage to the low-budget horror movies he loved growing up. Dekker's next project was the horror-comedy "The Monster Squad", which, although receiving mixed reviews and flopping at the box office, has since acquired a cult following.
In addition to his film work, Dekker wrote five episodes of the horror anthology series "Tales from the Crypt", including "Split Personality", "And All Through the House", "Lower Berth", "Only Sin Deep", and "The Thing From the Grave", which he also directed. He also wrote the stories for the revenge thriller "Ricochet" and the failed spy spoof "If Looks Could Kill".
More recently, Dekker wrote several episodes of the science fiction TV show "Enterprise" and served as a consulting producer on the series. Throughout his career, Dekker has demonstrated his versatility as a writer and director, exploring various genres and themes, and has built a loyal fan base for his work.
