Biography

François Leterrier's multifaceted career in cinema spanned numerous roles, from assistant director to writer and director, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.

Notably, Leterrier made a significant acting debut as the leading man in Robert Bresson's timeless masterpiece A Man Escaped (1956),where he portrayed Fontaine, a resourceful individual who skillfully attempts to escape from prison during World War II. This remarkable performance was a departure from his usual work behind the camera, and it showcased his exceptional acting abilities.

Leterrier's work with Bresson was a significant milestone in his career, and he only acted once more in Resnais' Stavisky (1974),where he took on the role of poet André Malraux.

Following his work with Bresson, Leterrier served as second assistant director on two films directed by Louis Malle: Elevator to the Gallows (1958) and The Lovers (1958). He then worked as an assistant director on four other films, honing his skills and gaining valuable experience in the industry.

Leterrier's directorial debut was in the film Les mauvais coups (1961),which starred the renowned actress Simone Signoret. Over the next three decades, he directed an impressive 20 projects, including Un roi sans divertissement (1963),La chasse royale (1969),Emmanuelle 3 (1977),Rat Race (1980),and Slices of Life (1985).

Leterrier's professional legacy extends beyond his own work, as he is the father of director Louis Leterrier, who is notable for directing films in the Transporter franchise.

Sadly, François Leterrier passed away on December 3, 2020, leaving behind a lasting impact on the world of cinema.
