Biography

Daniel Johns, a renowned performing artist, has left an indelible mark on the Australian music scene, capturing the essence of the youth in Australia and beyond. Initially, he rose to fame under the moniker "Innocent Criminals," winning several competitions that secured a record contract. Johns later opted to rename his band Silverchair, paying homage to his musical inspirations, Nirvana and You am I.

The band's debut extended play, "Tomorrow," was a resounding success in Australia, achieving double platinum status and ranking ninth on the year-end charts. When their debut album, "Frogstomp," was released, it did not surprise anyone that it became a massive seller, earning platinum certification in the United States and quadruple platinum in Australia, with sales nearing a million copies.

The band's subsequent album, "Freakshow," was a commercial disappointment, as Johns' songwriting became increasingly introspective and melancholic, reflecting his struggles with depression, anorexia, and arthritis. In 1999, he was stalked by a fan, but he found solace in his music, crafting ballads like "Cemetery," "Miss You Love," "Ana's Song," and "Abuse Me" that poignantly captured his experiences.

Currently, it appears that Johns has overcome his personal struggles, and his latest album, "Diorama," has received widespread critical acclaim. Unfortunately, his arthritis has made it difficult for him to tour, but his performance at the 2002 Aria Awards boosted album sales, with "Diorama" selling approximately 500,000 copies worldwide. Critics have hailed "Diorama" as Silverchair's best work yet.

Throughout his tribulations, Johns has been supported by his girlfriend, singer Natalie Imbruglia. He claims to have put his teenage angst and woes behind him, and with a remarkable album like "Diorama," one can trust his assertion. With a staggering 6 million albums sold worldwide, Johns has become a symbol of the youth in Australia and a hero to millions globally.
