Her career began with the critically acclaimed Party Girl, which premiered at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival and launched the career of Parker Posey, dubbed the "indie queen." The film's success led to a Fox TV series, and in 2023, a 4K Restoration Blu-Ray of Party Girl was released by Fun City Editions, selling out and re-releasing the film in art houses across the US, Canada, and the UK. Party Girl has since been included in a permanent exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York.
Following Party Girl, von Scherler Mayer directed the film adaptation of the classic children's book Madeline, starring Oscar winner Frances McDormand. She then directed The Guru, a Bollywood-influenced comedy starring Heather Graham and Marisa Tomei, for Working Title Films. Her return to indie roots came with a low-budget adaptation of Neil LaBute's play Some Girl(s),featuring Adam Brody, Emily Watson, Zoe Kazan, and Kristen Bell.
As a television director, von Scherler Mayer has worked on a wide range of projects, including hour-long dramas and half-hour comedies for various networks, cable channels, and streaming platforms. In 2019, she received a Gracie Award from the Alliance for Women in Media for her work on The Walking Dead.
Born and raised in New York City, von Scherler Mayer began her career in the entertainment industry by working backstage at the Delacorte Theater as a teenager and later as a production assistant for esteemed directors Sidney Lumet and Mira Nair. She honed her skills at the Williamstown Theater Festival, Circle in the Square, and the Atlantic Theater Company, and graduated from Wesleyan University with High Honors in Theater, where she studied film with Jeanine Basinger.
Von Scherler Mayer is married to film and television composer David Carbonara and resides in Los Angeles with their two daughters.
