For an extended period, he devoted his time and energy to managing the sporting goods firm founded by his father in Belfast, but by the mid-1950s, his interests and passions shifted, leading him to join the chorus of an amateur dramatic and operatic society.
His decision to join the society was largely driven by his infatuation with a girl member, whom he hoped to get to know better. Although his romantic feelings eventually subsided, he became increasingly captivated by the world of acting.
As a result, he continued to pursue his newfound passion, taking on various roles in productions such as 'Annie Get Your Gun', where he showcased his singing talents. He also played the character Judd in 'Oklahoma', before eventually joining the local repertory company.
In 1959, he made the bold decision to relocate to London, where he quickly established himself as a talented character actor, effortlessly transitioning from the stage to the big screen.
