His father was a displaced musician, and his grandparents were the legendary jazz and boogie-woogie composer/pianist Clarence Williams, who wrote classics such as "T'Aint Nobody's Business If I Do" and "Baby, Won't You Please Come Home," and blues singer Eva Taylor.
