Biography

Brend Bleathyn, a renowned actress, has spent over four decades honing her craft on stage, television, and film, earning her widespread recognition, stardom, and numerous accolades. Born in 1946 in Ramsgate, Kent, England, she began her career in the 1960s at British Rail, where she saved money and eventually took a risk to enroll at The Guildford School of Acting in Guildford, Surrey, England, leaving her British Rail years behind.

By the mid-1970s, Blethyn was working on stage, joining the National Theatre Company in 1975. Her career progressed, and she appeared in various stage productions throughout the 1980s. Although she was consistently working and receiving critical acclaim, she remained relatively unknown to the general public during this period.

It wasn't until the dawn of the 1990s that Blethyn's career gained momentum. In 1990, she played the supporting role of Mrs. Jenkins in the film adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel, The Witches, alongside Anjelica Huston, Jane Horrocks, and Mai Zetterling. This marked the beginning of her film career, which continued to flourish throughout the decade.

In the early 1990s, Blethyn appeared in A River Runs Through It (1992) and the television film The Bullion Boys (1993). She then took on a recurring role in the TV series Outside Edge (1994),which ran for two years.

1997 proved to be a pivotal year in Blethyn's career, as she was cast by her old friend Mike Leigh in the film Secrets & Lies (1996),alongside Marianne Jean-Baptiste. The film received widespread critical acclaim, and Blethyn won a BAFTA Film Award and received an Academy Award nomination for her role, alongside Jean-Baptiste.

Although she did not take home an Oscar, Blethyn's profile in Hollywood and Britain significantly increased as a result of the nomination and her appearance on The 69th Annual Academy Awards (1997). Following Secrets & Lies, Blethyn continued to work consistently in film, taking on roles in Little Voice (1998) and receiving a second Academy Award nomination.

Since 1996, Blethyn has found a new home in film, working consistently in the medium and earning widespread recognition for her outstanding performances.
