Alex Hammond is a Mexican-American independent filmmaker with a strong presence in both New York City and Mexico City. Her impressive body of work includes a feature debut that takes a poignant look at the lives of street kids in Cap-Haitian, Haiti, which premiered at the esteemed Museum of Modern Art and went on to screen at festivals around the world before being aired on PBS's Independent Lens series in 2011.
Hammond's subsequent feature documentary, Better Than Something: Jay Reatard, was co-directed and produced by her, and received widespread critical acclaim, earning the title of "best rock-doc of the year" from both the AV Club and IFC in 2012. Her third feature documentary, Lucha Mexico, delves into the captivating world of lucha libre, telling the stories of its biggest stars. Following a successful international festival run, the film was acquired by Kino Lorber and released theatrically and on VOD in North America, as well as on Netflix worldwide and the Starz Network.
In addition to these feature-length films, Hammond has produced and directed over a dozen shorts and music videos. Her most recent short film was featured at the prestigious Cannes Court Métrage in 2019, and she is currently in post-production on her feature documentary, Lucha Mexico: Round Two, as well as directing a short thriller set in Mexico, which is expected to be completed in 2021.
Hammond's educational background includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Production from the California Institute of Arts. She frequently collaborates with fellow filmmaker Ian Markiewicz on her projects.
