In the 1930s, two wealthy and competitive sisters, Eugenia and Nesta, engage in a series of one-upmanship, with Eugenia trying to buy a royal title and Nesta attempting to marry off her niece Ann to a nobleman. Meanwhile, Eugenia's stepson James, a notorious womanizer and journalist, falls in love with Ann, who is unaware of his true identity and harbors a grudge against him for criticizing her book. As James pursues Ann, he assumes a new identity as a respectable butler, while Ann is torn between her love for him and her desire for a more adventurous partner. The story unfolds with a series of misadventures, mistaken identities, and espionage, ultimately leading Ann to reevaluate her priorities and desires.
