Billie Holiday's tumultuous early life included working in brothels and being raped, but she dreamed of becoming a jazz singer. She got her start at a Harlem club, where she met and fell in love with Louis McKay. Despite her initial success, she struggled to advance her career in mainstream Manhattan clubs, and her substance abuse, particularly heroin, began to take a toll on her life and performances.
