Lew Harper, a private investigator, is hired by Elaine Sampson to find her missing husband, Ralph. Ralph disappeared at Van Nuys Airport after arriving from Vegas. Elaine believes he's cheating on her with another woman. Harper's investigation leads him to the Sampson estate, where he meets Miranda, Ralph's seductive daughter, and Allan Taggert, Ralph's private pilot. As Harper digs deeper, he encounters a cast of shady characters, including a junkie lounge singer, an ex-movie star turned heavy drinker, and a cult leader. The case takes a surprising turn when Harper agrees to pay the $500,000 ransom to find Ralph.
