Paul Leonard Newman was born on January 26, 1925, in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, to Arthur Sigmund Newman and Theresa Fetsko. His father, a Jewish businessman, owned a successful sporting goods store, and his mother, a Roman Catholic Slovak, was a practicing Christian Scientist. Newman's parents were well-to-do, and he grew up in affluent Shaker Heights.
