Alex Holbeck, a C.I.A. recruit, is sent to East Berlin to steal the Enigma machine's scrambler, but his contacts are arrested and he's forced to go into hiding. He reunites with his former lover, Karen, who helps him evade capture while also seducing a Russian agent to gather crucial information. Unbeknownst to Holbeck, the C.I.A. has already obtained the scrambler, using him as bait to deceive the Russians into thinking they don't have it.
