In 1957, lawyer James B. Donovan defends accused Soviet spy Rudolf Abel, an unenviable task due to his lack of criminal law experience and the strong anti-Communist sentiment. Despite the challenges, Donovan convinces the judge to sentence Abel to prison, rather than execution, in case the Soviets might have an American spy in custody.
