Biography

Ethan Coen, the younger brother of Joel Coen, is a renowned Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning writer, producer, and director. Born on September 21, 1957, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he has made a significant impact in the film industry, transitioning from small independent films to big-budget Hollywood productions.

Ethan's early work included films like Blood Simple (1984),Raising Arizona (1987),and Miller's Crossing (1990),which showcased his versatility as a writer and producer. His collaborations with his brother Joel resulted in critically acclaimed films, with each project offering a unique blend of creativity, art, and daring storytelling.

One of his most notable works is Barton Fink (1991),which marked a breakthrough for the Coen brothers, earning them their first Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and Oscar nominations. The film's success was followed by The Hudsucker Proxy (1994),an underrated comedy that laid the groundwork for their future projects.

Ethan's career gained momentum with the release of Fargo (1996),a dark comedy that received widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. The film's success was followed by The Big Lebowski (1998),which cemented the Coen brothers' status as one of the greatest writers and directors of their generation.

The early 2000s saw the release of O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000),The Man Who Wasn't There (2001),Intolerable Cruelty (2003),and The Ladykillers (2004),which marked a period of minor hits and some downer moments. However, the brothers bounced back with the highly acclaimed No Country for Old Men (2007),which won three Oscars, including Best Picture, Screenplay, and Writing.

Ethan's subsequent films, including A Serious Man (2009),Burn After Reading (2008),True Grit (2010),Inside Llewyn Davis (2013),Hail, Caesar! (2016),and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018),have received widespread critical acclaim and awards recognition.

In addition to his work with his brother, Ethan has also ventured into writing for other directors, including Angelina Jolie's Unbroken (2014),Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies (2015),and George Clooney's Suburbicon (2017).

In his personal life, Ethan has been married to Tricia Cooke, an assistant editor, since 1990.
