Lionel Worthing, a music prodigy from a poor Kentucky farming family, can visualize sound. He meets David Smith, a student from a more privileged background, at a music conservatory in New England in 1917. Their shared love of folk music brings them together, and their bond eventually becomes romantic and sexual. After the Great War, they reunite when David asks Lionel to join him on a project to collect folk songs in rural New England.
