Tom Nelis is a talented actor who has made a significant impact in the world of film and television. His recent work includes portraying the iconic character of Howard Hughes in J.J. Abrams' new HBO series DUSTER, opposite the acclaimed actor Paul Mescal in HISTORY OF SOUND, and appearing in OUT AND ABOUT, GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY, INDECENT, ESTELLA SCROGE, THE TWIN TOWERS, MISSING CHILDREN, WHOPPIE, SMASH, LITTLE KINGS, and A GIFTED MAN.
In addition to his film and television work, Nelis has also had a successful career on Broadway, appearing in GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY, INDECENT, THE VISIT, ENRON, THE CAINE MUTINY COURT MARTIAL, and AIDA. His Off-Broadway credits include The Public Theater, Playwrights Horizons, The Signature Theater, Classic Stage Company, Theater for a New Audience / The Royal Shakespeare Company, Cafe La Mama, New York Theater Workshop, Second Stage, Dance Theater Workshop, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, Mineta Lane, and Manhattan Theater Club, as well as regional theaters across the United States.
Throughout his career, Nelis has received numerous awards and nominations for his performances. He was awarded an Eliot Norton Award for his portrayal of Prospero in The Tempest, an OBIE Award for his role as Marshall McLuhan in THE MEDIUM, and a Drama League Nomination for his performance as Leonard Bernstein in SCORE.
Nelis was also a founding member of SITI Company, a renowned theater ensemble, and performed with them for 25 years. He has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe with both Laurie Anderson and Richard Foreman. He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, San Diego.
