The biopic tells the story of Ernie Davis, a talented African-American athlete, and his coach Ben Schwartzwalder at Syracuse University from 1958 to 1962. Recruited by Schwartzwalder and All-American running back Jim Brown, Davis faces prejudice on campus, in town, and on the field, including from teammates. Despite this, Davis and Schwartzwalder's relationship is put to the test as Davis challenges his coach to stand up for his players, set against the backdrop of the civil rights movement.
