A New York postal clerk's life is forever changed when he shoots a stranger, leading to the discovery of a valuable Italian marble head missing since World War II. The story unfolds through flashbacks of four Black soldiers who cross the Serchio River in Tuscany, dodging German and friendly fire, to capture a German soldier and uncover the truth about a counteroffensive. The soldiers encounter a beautiful woman, partisans, and a local legend, all connected to a recent massacre that resonates with the postal worker's anguish forty years later.
