They're guided by social workers Karen and Sharon, and attend a fair where they meet kids they're interested in adopting. Despite initial hesitation, they consider taking in Lizzy, a teenager who's been neglected by her drug-addicted mother. The social workers reveal Lizzy's troubled past, including a house fire caused by her mother's carelessness. Despite the challenges, Pete and Ellie agree to meet Lizzy's two younger siblings, Juan and Lita.
