Nick Charles, a former detective, returns to New York with his wife Nora and their dog Asta after a four-year absence. He reconnects with his old acquaintances, including eccentric characters, and is approached by Dorothy Wynant whose inventor father is suspected of murdering his former secretary. Despite initial reluctance, Nick agrees to help solve the case, egged on by his wife, and eventually announces the killer's identity at a dinner party for all the suspects.
