Nora's British pilot husband is reported missing in action during World War II, leading her to give birth to their son Tommy on V.E. Day. As Tommy grows up, Nora remarries a dubious camp counselor named Frank. After Tommy experiences a traumatic event, he becomes deaf, mute, and blind.
